On the 19 of February each year, Mexico celebrates Army Day. The Mexican army was officially established in 1821 after winning independence from Spain at the conclusion of the Mexican War of Independence. This date marks the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862, where a group of rag-tag Mexicans defeated a French force that outnumbered them by 7000 soldiers. This battle is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo and became an unofficial holiday for Mexico. However on February 19th, it becomes official as it commemorates the first time Mexicans took up arms against their oppressors to fight for what was right. Army day will be celebrated with parades and processions of troops, military equipment and historic vehicles. The Mexican president will review the troop formations in Mexico City to commemorate the occasion, while across the country other ceremonies will be held such as flag raising and wreath laying displays.

Mexico celebrates 'Army Day' on February 19th, the day of the Mexican Army's creation. The day is also known as "Día de las Fuerzas Armadas" (Day of the Armed Forces). The celebration was first authorized by General Salvador Cienfuegos in 1958 to honor our military history. The day commemorates the anniversary of the decree signed by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla that declared the nation's army independent from Spain on February 20, 1810. It was later reestablished as a single corps by Ignacio Comonfort in 1847 and remains as such to this day.
